DS Audio ION-001 Vinyl Ionizer

The DS Audio ION-001 is a vinyl ionizer designed to eliminate static electricity from record surfaces before and during playback. Static charge is a persistent issue in vinyl playback, attracting dust to the record surface and contributing to surface noise. The ION-001 addresses this at the source by flooding the record surface with a balanced stream of positive and negative ions, neutralizing the charge without physical contact.

How It Works

Vinyl records accumulate static charge through two primary sources: friction from the stylus tracking the groove during playback, and the act of removing a record from its inner sleeve or jacket. This charge attracts airborne dust and debris to the record surface, increasing surface noise and potentially degrading playback over time.

The ION-001 counters this by generating both positive and negative ions simultaneously from four ionizer emitters, two of each polarity. As these ions reach the record surface, they neutralize the existing static charge regardless of its polarity. The process requires no physical contact with the record and operates continuously, meaning static accumulated during a side of playback is addressed in real time as well as before the record is placed on the platter.

Fanless Design and Ozone Control

Many ionizers use an internal fan to project ions toward the target surface. DS Audio took a different approach with the ION-001, using a fanless design that produces no mechanical noise during operation. This is particularly relevant for vinyl playback, where the listening environment demands silence. The ION-001 can remain powered on continuously throughout a listening session without introducing any audible noise of its own.

Ionizers can produce ozone as a byproduct, which in sufficient concentrations can oxidize nearby surfaces and components. The ION-001 uses a specialized power supply controller that suppresses excess ozone generation, keeping output below 0.01ppm, well within safe limits for continuous operation in a listening room.

Tower Form Factor and Placement

The ION-001 uses a horizontal tower form factor measuring 84 x 84 x 250mm. It is designed to sit beside the turntable on the equipment shelf, with the ionizer outlets directed across the platter at record height. The design is compatible with turntables whose platter surface sits at up to 18cm in height. For turntables with a taller platter, DS Audio provides a separate riser accessory to raise the ION-001 to the correct operating height. Its compact footprint and 950g weight make it unobtrusive alongside any turntable setup.

Additional Compatibility

In addition to vinyl records, the ION-001 is effective for static removal from compact discs. The unit accepts standard AC input and includes a universal power adapter.
