DS Audio TB-50

The DS Audio TB-50 is a hybrid tube phono equalizer developed exclusively for DS Audio optical cartridges. Announced at High End Vienna 2026 and shipping July 2026, it uses solid-state circuitry for RIAA equalization and amplification, followed by an ECC82 (12AU7) vacuum tube buffer in the final output stage. The TB-50 is compatible with the complete range of DS Audio optical cartridges and cannot be used with MM or MC cartridges.

Hybrid Architecture

All RIAA equalization and signal amplification in the TB-50 is handled by solid-state circuitry: low-noise Japanese transistors in the current-transmission input stage and an op-amp based amplification stage. The final output stage passes through an ECC82 (12AU7) vacuum tube buffer. DS Audio states this assigns each technology to the domain where it excels -- solid-state for the accuracy, frequency response, response speed, and S/N ratio that precision RIAA equalization demands, and vacuum tubes for harmonic richness and tonal color in the output stage.

The TB-50 and TB-100 are not positioned as upper and lower tier products. The TB-100 is a pure tube design; the TB-50 is a hybrid offering greater speed and clarity while retaining tube tonal character. DS Audio describes them as different sonic directions.

Current-Drive Cartridge Connection

The TB-50 input stage receives the cartridge signal as current rather than voltage. DS Audio states this minimizes the influence of cable capacitance and contact resistance on the musical information from the cartridge, and allows the wide bandwidth of the optical cartridge to be fully drawn out. Power for the cartridge's LED is also supplied from the TB-50, as with all DS Audio equalizers -- a further reason the TB-50 is designed exclusively for optical cartridges and cannot function as a conventional MM or MC phono stage.

Tubes and Maintenance

The ECC82 (12AU7) tubes are the same type used in the TB-100. Unlike the TB-100, the TB-50 does not require matched pairs, making tube replacement a user-serviceable task. Any commercially available ECC82 (12AU7) may be used. DS Audio states typical tube life is approximately 5,000-10,000 hours, corresponding to roughly 4-9 years at 3-4 hours of use per day. Indicators that tubes may need replacement include reduced freshness or definition, diminished low-frequency weight or high-frequency extension, and longer warm-up time than normal.

Tube Illumination and Thermal Management

A dedicated duct structure draws fresh air from outside the chassis and vents heat from the tubes, keeping the internal temperature within a stable operating range during extended listening sessions. LED illumination beneath each tube is continuously adjustable via a rear panel control, from minimum to maximum brightness, allowing the visual presence of the unit to be matched to the listening environment.
