Gryphon Essence Power Amplifier

The Gryphon Essence is a pure Class A power amplifier available in stereo and mono configurations, representing Gryphon's entry point into the company's dedicated power amplifier range. Conservatively rated at 50 watts per channel into 8 ohms in full Class A, with output that doubles as impedance halves, it is built on the same core design principles that define every Gryphon amplifier: dual-mono topology, zero global negative feedback, and the current delivery to maintain stable, authoritative control over any loudspeaker load. Designed and built in Denmark, the Essence is the starting point for those building a system around Gryphon separates.

Position in the Gryphon Lineup

The Essence sits below the Antileon Revelation in Gryphon's power amplifier range, sharing the same foundational design philosophy while offering a more accessible path into Gryphon's pure Class A performance. Like its more powerful siblings, it is designed to be paired with a Gryphon preamplifier, with native support for Gryphon's Green Bias system. Where the Antileon Revelation and Apex feature a front-panel touchscreen display, the Essence uses an RGB LED lightbar for bias indication, reflecting its position as the more approachable Gryphon power amplifier while retaining the essential circuit architecture.

Pure Class A and Bias Management

At Bias High, the Essence operates in full Class A. At Bias Low, it shifts to Class A/B operation, reducing idle dissipation for periods of casual listening. Bias selection is made manually via a switch on the bottom panel, or automatically through Gryphon's Green Bias system. When a Green Bias link cable is connected to a compatible Gryphon preamplifier, the preamplifier's volume control position determines the amplifier's bias state: the Essence moves to Bias High in response to mid or high volume commands, and to Bias Low when the preamplifier is at low levels. The Green Bias cable is entirely outside the signal path.

The RGB LED lightbar on the front panel indicates the current operating state. In standard mode, the lightbar glows blue at idle and briefly shows the bias setting in red (Bias High) or green (Bias Low) when a change is made. A second mode displays the bias status continuously. A third stealth mode disables the lightbar entirely for those who prefer a darkened listening environment.

Output Stage and Power Supply

The stereo Essence employs ten high-current bipolar output transistors per channel, twenty in total. Each mono unit uses twenty. The power supply is built around a custom-made 1350VA toroidal transformer with separate dual windings for left and right channels. The capacitor bank reaches 440,000uF in the stereo version, and 440,000uF per mono unit. The driver stage operates from its own power supply, fed from dedicated windings on the main transformer, with its own bank of capacitors to isolate it from the output stage. A separate power supply for control and display circuits prevents any digital noise from the front panel from reaching the amplifier stages. Polypropylene capacitors are used for local power supply decoupling.

Circuit Design

The Essence uses a balanced dual differential Class A input stage followed by a high-speed voltage amplifying Class A stage. Zero global negative feedback is applied throughout the signal path. DC servo coupling eliminates any need for coupling capacitors in the signal path. The input impedance is 20k ohms, and the output impedance is 0.015 ohms for the stereo version and 0.0075 ohms for the mono, both frequency-independent. Bandwidth extends from 0.3Hz to 350kHz. Gryphon silver wiring is used for internal signal and power connections. Four-layer circuit boards with 70 micron copper traces carry signal and power throughout.

Protection and Operation

The Essence uses Gryphon's non-invasive microprocessor-controlled protection system. The output signal is continuously compared to the input signal; if a discrepancy exceeds predetermined limits, the amplifier mutes and enters standby. Heatsink temperature is also continuously monitored, with automatic shutdown if the temperature exceeds 90 degrees Celsius. A soft-start circuit prevents in-rush current from triggering household circuit breakers at power-on. Standby power consumption is below 0.5 watts.

Connectivity and Design

Each stereo channel accepts one balanced XLR input. The mono version provides an XLR input plus a pass-through for straightforward system integration. Speaker connections use Gryphon's own gold-plated custom binding posts. A 12V link input and pass-through accommodate remote system power-up and power-down. The Green Bias link input and pass-through allow connection in a chain with other Gryphon components. The chassis was designed by Flemming E. Rasmussen, whose Nordic Noir aesthetic and large heatsink fins give the Essence a visual presence that reflects its thermal and electrical output capacity.

Recognition

The Gryphon Essence Power received awards from HiFi+ (paired with the Essence Preamplifier), Audio Art magazine in Taiwan, and Pursuit Perfect System. It has been reviewed by SoundStage Ultra and noted as a product that consistently sounds more powerful than its rated output would suggest, a characteristic of Class A designs with deep current reserves. The Gryphon Essence is the entry point to Gryphon's philosophy of power amplification: conservative ratings, massive reserves, and the uncolored musical presentation that the company has pursued since its founding.
