Gryphon PowerZone 3 Power Conditioner
The Gryphon PowerZone 3 is an AC power conditioning unit that takes a fundamentally different approach from conventional power conditioners. Rather than filtering the AC supply or actively regenerating it, the PowerZone 3 works by optimizing the flow of electrons through the conductor using proprietary HafnerTech conductor modules developed by Paul Hafner of Quantum Acoustics SRL. Available in two models, the PZ3.10 with a single 20-amp feed and eight outlets, and the PZ3.20 with two independent 20-amp feeds and eight outlets in two banks for a total of 40 amps, the PowerZone 3 is designed to serve systems of any scale, from a complete source-based system to the most demanding monoblock amplifier pairs. Designed and built in Denmark.
The Problem with Conventional Power Conditioning
Most power conditioners address power quality through filtering, current limiting, or active signal regeneration. Gryphon and Paul Hafner's position, presented in the PowerZone 3 documentation, is that these approaches introduce their own compromises, including restrictions on dynamic current delivery, phase anomalies, and sonic colorations of their own. The PowerZone 3 avoids all of these mechanisms entirely. There is no filtering, no current limiting, and no active signal processing anywhere in the unit. Both the PZ3.10 and PZ3.20 are also fuse-free, with no internal or external fuses anywhere in the design.
HafnerTech: The Core Technology
The PowerZone 3's operating principle is based on Paul Hafner's Quantum Acoustics Resonant Feedback Theory. In any electrical circuit, current flow involves micro-vibrations at a molecular level. When a dynamic (variable) AC signal passes through a conductor with a random crystalline structure, those micro-vibrations become uncontrolled resonances. Hafner's approach, as described in the PowerZone 3 documentation, is to address this at the conductor level rather than at the signal level.
HafnerTech conductor modules feature geometrically adapted crystalline structures at the molecular level that guide the vibrational flow of electrons through the conductor in an optimized, undisturbed way. Because the approach operates without any loss of energy, Gryphon states that no additional noise or heat is produced. The objective is to create a neutral, optimized environment through which the AC power passes without stress, confusion, or distortion, while enhancing the speed and precision of the transmitted current. All HafnerTech modules are potted in resin to mitigate mechanical vibration and to deliver the long-term build quality expected of Gryphon components. The HafnerTech conductor approach is patent-pending.
SmartStack Chassis Damping
Great attention has been given to the mechanical environment in which the HafnerTech modules operate. The PowerZone 3 is the first product outside the automotive industry to utilize SmartStack, a patented compound damping technology developed by Denmark's MENETA Group. Gryphon commissioned MENETA's Danish R&D facility to perform measurements, calculations, and simulations specific to the PowerZone 3 enclosure. The result, as Gryphon describes it, is a dramatic reduction in mechanical resonance not achievable by any other method. Each PowerZone 3 chassis is a dual-layer design with a steel core clad in an aluminum exterior, combining the mass and rigidity of steel with the non-magnetic and acoustic properties of aluminum.
PowerZone 3.10 and PowerZone 3.20
The PZ3.10 houses one HafnerTech module and provides a single bank of eight outlets fed by one 20-amp IEC-C20 inlet. It is rated to handle a complete high-end system including a stereo power amplifier at the scale of the Gryphon Apex Stereo. The PZ3.20 houses two HafnerTech modules and provides two independent banks of four outlets, each fed by its own 20-amp IEC-C20 inlet, for a total capacity of 40 amps. It is designed for the most ambitious systems, including full mono amplifier configurations such as the Apex Mono. The PZ3.20's two-bank design makes it particularly well suited for large monoblock amplifiers that draw from two independent power feeds, with the left bank dedicated to one monoblock chassis and the right bank to the other.
Both models share identical external dimensions of 486 x 125 x 285 mm. The PZ3.20 is 1 kg heavier at 11.9 kg versus 10.9 kg for the PZ3.10, reflecting the additional HafnerTech module.
Star Grounding, Wiring, and Outlets
Both PowerZone 3 models implement star grounding throughout. The ground binding post and every AC outlet are wired to a single chassis star-point, positioned after the HafnerTech module. This topology ensures that all outlets share a single, clean ground reference rather than a daisy-chained arrangement that can introduce ground loops. The Live and Neutral legs of the AC signal are each treated with their own conductive environments within the PowerZone 3, specifically adapted to the unique characteristics of each leg.
All internal wiring is 12 AWG silver-plated oxygen-free copper with Teflon insulation. Every outlet is connected using WAGO connectors, a professional-grade wiring system that Gryphon specifies to ensure every socket is electrically and sonically identical. The US version provides eight 20-amp NEMA 5-20R outlets that accept both NEMA 5-15P and NEMA 5-20P plugs, making them compatible with standard US plugs as well as the 20-amp plugs found on many high-end power cables including the Gryphon Vanta Power Cable.
Burn-in and Placement
The PowerZone 3 is fully tested and burned-in before shipping. However, Gryphon's manual states that performance continues to improve during the first 40 to 50 hours of normal use in the system. The unit should not be placed near or on top of heat-generating equipment such as power amplifiers, and should not be positioned in a way that blocks any ventilation on adjacent components. Correct AC polarity, while not enforced by a non-reversible plug in all regions, is noted by Gryphon as contributing significantly to optimum performance.
The Gryphon PowerZone 3 represents a collaboration between Gryphon's manufacturing expertise and Paul Hafner's proprietary conductor research, applied with the same rigorous build quality and long-term thinking that characterizes every product in the Gryphon lineup.
