Description
The Gryphon PS3 is a dual-mono Class A MM/MC phono module for the Diablo 333 integrated amplifier and Helios preamplifier. An updated version of the PS2-S, it offers a fully balanced signal path from cartridge to output, rear panel MC load adjustment from 20 to 1600 ohms, and zero global negative feedback. Gain is 64dB for MC and 42dB for MM. Polypropylene capacitors are used in the RIAA correction stages. The Gryphon PS3 is designed and built in Denmark.

Gryphon PS3 Phono Module
The Gryphon PS3 is a dual-mono, fully balanced Class A MM/MC phono module designed for installation in compatible Gryphon components. Based on the legendary Gryphon Legato phono stage and developed as the successor to the PS2 and PS2-S modules, the PS3 brings a true balanced signal path, discrete matched transistor circuit topology, and externally accessible MC load adjustment to the Diablo 333 integrated amplifier and Helios preamplifier. It is installed by an authorized Gryphon dealer.
Lineage and Development
Gryphon has offered phono stage modules for its integrated amplifiers and preamplifiers throughout the company's history, providing vinyl playback capability without requiring a separate external phono preamplifier. The PS3 is the latest generation of that tradition, updating the PS2 and PS2-S with an extended range of MC load impedance options accessible from the rear panel rather than via internal jumpers. Gryphon states that the PS3 is based on the Legato phono stage, one of the company's most respected standalone phono designs.
Circuit Design
The PS3 uses a true dual-mono Class A topology with a discrete balanced circuit built on matched transistor arrays, with zero global negative feedback maintained throughout. The signal path is DC-coupled from input to output. Gryphon designed the PS3 to fully exploit the inherently balanced nature of the phono cartridge, with the balanced XLR input carrying the cartridge's differential signal directly into the balanced circuit without mode conversion. Polypropylene capacitors are used in the RIAA correction stages. Power is supplied by low noise regulated +/-23VDC supplies. The circuit board is a four-layer design with 70 micron copper traces and an ultra-short signal path with minimal internal wiring.
MC Load Adjustment
A key advancement over the PS2-S is the ability to adjust MC cartridge load impedance from the rear panel of the host component, without opening the chassis or moving internal jumpers. MC load is adjustable in steps from 20 ohms to 1600 ohms via rear panel switches. MM loading is fixed at 47kΩ with 220pF capacitance. MC/MM mode selection is made through the host component's menu system, either the Diablo 333 display and front panel controls or the Helios touchscreen.
Gain and Compatibility
Gain is 64dB for moving coil cartridges and 42dB for moving magnet cartridges. The PS3 accepts the balanced XLR output of tonearm cables equipped with XLR connectors, maintaining the fully balanced signal path from cartridge through to the host component's line stage. The PS3 is compatible with the Gryphon Diablo 333 integrated amplifier and the Gryphon Helios preamplifier. Installation must be performed by an authorized Gryphon dealer and can be done at the time of purchase or as a retrofit.
