Marten Mingus Septet

The Marten Mingus Septet is an advanced 4-way floorstanding loudspeaker featuring seven drivers and representing the culmination of four years of research and development. Introduced in 2023 and handcrafted in Gothenburg, Sweden, the Septet combines custom diamond and beryllium drivers with Marten's signature first-order crossover to deliver reference-level performance in a room-friendly format.

Position in the Marten Lineup

The Mingus Septet sits at the top of the Mingus series, positioned below only the flagship Coltrane collection and the massive Mingus Orchestra. It represents a significant advancement for the Mingus range, being the first model in the series to feature custom-designed diamond and beryllium drivers developed specifically for this application. The Septet brings much of the technology from the flagship Coltrane models into a more accessible package while maintaining genuine full-range capability.

Driver Configuration

The Mingus Septet employs seven drivers in a sophisticated 4-way configuration:

A custom 1-inch pure diamond tweeter handles frequencies above 6,000Hz. Diamond's extreme rigidity enables distortion-free reproduction even at high volumes, while its thermal conductivity allows operation at high power levels without overheating.

A custom 3-inch beryllium dome driver covers the high-midrange from 800Hz to 6,000Hz. Beryllium's combination of stiffness, low mass, and high damping provides fast transient response and exceptional clarity through the presence region.

A 7-inch ceramic "sapphire" mid-bass driver handles 200Hz to 800Hz. The refined electrochemical process used to create these domes results in high internal damping and minimal distortion.

Two 8-inch aluminum sandwich honeycomb woofers cover the bass frequencies below 200Hz, featuring long excursion and hidden surrounds for low distortion.

Two 10-inch passive aluminum sandwich radiators on the rear panel augment bass response, providing fuller, more rounded low-frequency reproduction similar to the larger Mingus Orchestra.

First-Order Crossover

The Mingus Septet employs Marten's signature first-order crossover with points at 200Hz, 800Hz, and 6,000Hz. This topology ensures perfect time and phase coherence across all four frequency bands. The wide 800Hz-6,000Hz range assigned to the beryllium driver is unusual, effectively splitting traditional midrange duties across two specialized drivers for optimized performance in each band.

Cabinet Construction

The tapered cabinet is constructed from 25-40mm fibreboard laminate with advanced damping materials, internal bracing, and a 4mm aluminum plate for rigidity. Solid wood tops and bottoms in walnut, oak, or zebrano (or optional piano lacquer finishes in Black, Grey, Plum, Red, or Gold) provide both resonance control and visual customization options. Each cabinet is hand-finished with seven layers of lacquer, each polished between coats.

Marten Isolators on mirror-polished stainless steel outriggers decouple the cabinet from the floor. Four casters are supplied for positioning, replaced with isolators once the optimal location is determined.

Bass Adjustment

A four-position bass control allows adjustment for different room acoustics, enabling the Septet to perform optimally in a wide range of environments.

Standard vs. Statement Edition

The Mingus Septet is available in two configurations: Standard and Statement Edition.

Standard Edition

The Standard edition features premium crossover components and Jorma Design internal wiring, delivering the full Mingus Septet performance with exceptional clarity and dynamic capability.

Statement Edition

The Statement Edition upgrades to Jorma Statement internal cables and higher-grade crossover components. This configuration maximizes resolution, transparency, and refinement for the most demanding listeners.

Performance Characteristics

With 88-89dB sensitivity and a nominal 6-ohm impedance (minimum 2.7 ohms), the Mingus Septet requires quality amplification capable of driving moderate impedance dips. Power handling is 300 watts. The frequency response of 23Hz to 40kHz (±2dB) provides true full-range performance with bass extension that competes with dedicated subwoofers.

Summary

The Marten Mingus Septet represents a milestone in the Mingus series, combining custom diamond and beryllium drivers with ceramic mid-bass and aluminum sandwich woofers in a sophisticated 4-way design. The first-order crossover ensures time-coherent reproduction across the full bandwidth. The Statement Edition upgrade provides ultimate refinement. At 95kg per speaker, the Mingus Septet delivers commanding authority and dynamic scale while remaining practical for dedicated listening rooms. The Marten Mingus Septet establishes a new reference point for the Mingus series.

  • Marten Mingus Septet Floor-standing Loudspeakers

    Diamond Tweeter: 6000-40000 Hz

We created custom pure diamond tweeters for Mingus Septet. Diamond is an extremely hard and rigid material, allowing it to vibrate very quickly without deforming or breaking. It can produce very accurate sound reproduction without distortion, even at high volumes.

Diamond has a very high stiffness-to-weight ratio, meaning that it can move quickly and accurately with minimal energy input. This allows it to produce sound with minimal distortion or damping. It is also a good conductor of heat— it can dissipate the heat generated by the speaker coil more effectively than other materials. This allows the speaker to operate at high power levels without overheating or damaging the voice coil.

The newly designed first order crossover harnesses the natural clarity and purity of diamond, while softening any harshness.

  • Marten Mingus Septet Floor-standing Loudspeakers

    Beryllium High Midrange: 800-6000 Hz

Our custom-designed high midrange drivers are made from one of the most reliable materials in the industry: beryllium. This metal is lighter than ceramic, offering a faster transient response and high efficiency. Known for its exceptional strength and lightweight properties, it’s high in damping and low in resonance, making it an ideal choice for high-performance drivers.

  • Marten Mingus Septet Floor-standing Loudspeakers

    Ceramic Mid-Bass Midrange: 200-800 Hz

The ceramic domes in Mingus Septet are made of a stiff, light, and extremely rigid ceramic material known as ‘sapphire’, making it a great choice in this frequency range. The refined electrochemical process used to create these domes results in a high internal damping factor, which helps minimise distortion and provides a level of clarity that is perfect for high-end speaker domes.

  • Marten Mingus Septet Floor-standing Loudspeakers

    Bass: 45-200 Hz

The bass driver units in Mingus Septet have long excursion, extremely low distortion levels, and a hidden surround. The drivers are made of aluminium sandwich honeycomb which offer rich, dynamic bass performance and a powerful presentation.

  • Marten Mingus Septet Floor-standing Loudspeakers

    Passive Bass: 23-45 Hz

Mingus Septet, like its bigger cousin Mingus Orchestra, has 10” passive aluminium sandwich drivers to enhance the overall bass response, resulting in fuller, more rounded bass.

    Cabinets: Form and Function Unified

Mingus Septet is tapered to create fewer sound reflections and a sleek form. It is crafted with the finest materials, including specially selected medium-density fiberboard with optimum rigidity to create high-quality, resonance-free cabinets. The internal structure and bracing keep the cabinet rigid, while advanced materials dampen resonance inside.

Each cabinet is finished with precision lacquering, the lacquer carefully built up of seven layers, each hand-polished in between drying.

    Upgrade: Statement Edition

Mingus Septet can be upgraded to Statement Edition, featuring Jorma Statement internal cables and higher quality crossover components.

  • Crossover: First class as always

The first order crossover has always been an integral component of the Mingus sound. The new crossover for Mingus Septet offers sound which is more open, cleaner, and dynamic, making it exceptionally powerful in the bass frequencies. This type of crossover makes it possible to have perfect time and phase coherence; and flawless time coincidence. This means that all registers are generated at the exact same moment, as it was recorded.
